"My Life" is a song by Billy Joel that first appeared on his 1978 album 52nd Street. A single version was released in the fall of 1978 and reached #2 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart. Early the next year it peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“My Life” tells the story of an old friend who has evidently decided to follow Billy Joel’s example, put everything on the line, and move to the West Coast in search of his dreams. Although somewhat cynical about his friend’s chances, Joel still supports his right to determine his own future without pressure from family or cultural expectations. He favors the idea that everyone should have an opportunity to try and should have the courage to somehow make their dreams come true.
